No Flash for the iPhone gives competitors a leg up

"...not only does Skyfire allow mobile users to view rich websites, it is also very fast."

The big announcement this week is that Flash 10 is coming a number of mobile operating systems this year, including Google Android, Windows Mobile and the Palm WEbOS. Unfortunately, the iPhone is not on that list, which may put the iPhone behind the eight ball when it comes to getting the full web experience.

The iPhone's Safari browser is already getting some competition from the recently-released Skyfire browser, which supports both Flash and AJAX and runs on Windows Mobile and Nokia smartphones with a Blackberry edition in the works. And not only does Skyfire allow mobile users to view rich websites, it is also very fast.

And with Flash 10 coming to a host of smartphones later this year, the iPhone may have trouble living up to the motto of giving people access to the "real Internet" on their phone.

But while no Flash on the Safari browser is a real bummer, it might not be missed too much in the app store. Two former Adobe engineers are working on a Flash-like platform called Corona, which should be a real boon to iPhone developers.
