Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP Receives North American South Asian Bar Association's Outstanding Community Service Law Firm Award
June 27, 2006
27 June 2006, Chicago -- Mayer. Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP has been given the North American South Asian Bar Association's ("NASABA") Outstanding Community Service Law Firm Award in recognition of its commitment to community service.
The award was presented at the NASABA Annual Convention recently in front of over 400 attorneys and law students from the U.S., Canada and India. In presenting the award, NASABA cited the firm's pro bono efforts in the U.S., U.K. and South Asia:
"Many of us know Mayer Brown as one of the largest law firms in the country, with over 1,400 lawyers in seven U.S. and six European cities. What we may not know so well is the extent of the firm's commitment to community service. They have a full-time director of pro bono activities, based in the U.S., and a partner in the U.K. in charge of pro bono opportunities there.
For example, Mayer Brown has supported the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership. The partnership was established to encourage the private sector to work with schools in Tower Hamlets in the East End of London. Over half the population comes from nonwhite ethnic groups and about a third are Bangladeshi in origin.
In terms of legal work, Mayer Brown has done a great deal of pro bono work in the area of immigration through the Midwest Immigrant and Human Rights Center in Chicago, including cases involving domestic abuse and unaccompanied immigrant children.
The firm has involved itself with significant pro bono work, taking on SKS India and the Asian University for Women as pro bono clients. SKS India is one of the largest microfinance organizations in India which helps the poor. The Asian University for Women is a women's university being built in Bangladesh.
With a firm the size of Mayer Brown, the term 'community service' takes on a whole new meaning. Community is not just the area surrounding its founding office in Chicago, but to Mayer Brown, community is world-wide. NASABA recognizes Mayer Brown as a law firm truly committed to community service."
The award was accepted by partner Ashish Prasad and associate Shirish Gupta on behalf of the firm.
