Michael Counts is an artist and entrepreneur who has been a pioneer in alternative theatre, art and entertainment for more than a decade. As co-founder and artistic director of Gale Gates et al he was instrumental in the development of DUMBO, Brooklyn and served as primary architect of the creative identity of this now vibrant cultural district. Known for sprawling, environmental and experiential theatrical productions that immerse audiences by taking them on an actual journey, Mr. Counts has been called a ?mad genius? by the New York Times and was identified by Time Out New York as having ?one of the most fertile imaginations in New York City theatre.? He has created productions and public artworks in Japan, Thailand, Prague and his work has been presented by the Guild Hall Museum and The Whitney Museum of American Art. Based on the principle of convergence, Mr. Counts? work strives to unite a diversity of media in an effort to transform the perspective of his audiences -- his primary goal is to reinvent mainstream entertainment. He studied at Skidmore college under Gautam Dasgupta, author, critic and founding editor of Performing Arts Journal.
